Dido fell in love with Aeneas after his landing in Africa, and Virgil attributes her suicide to her abandonment by him at the command of Jupiter. Her dying curse on the Trojans provides a mythical origin for the Punic Wars between Rome and Carthage. Dido has been identified by modern scholars with the Virgo Caelestis; i.e., Tanit, the tutelary goddess of Carthage.

The plot is drawn from a famous episode in Virgil's epic poem and centers on Dido, Queen of Carthage, who falls in love with Prince Aeneas, lately of the vanquished Troy, who is resting at Carthage on his way to establishing Rome.

Dido and Aeneas Overview. Dido and Aeneas was an opera composed by the English Baroque composer Henry Purcell. It had its first documented performance in 1689, at Josias Priest's girls' school in Dido and Aeneas is a dance adaptation of Henry Purcell’s 1689 eponymous opera, based on Virgil’s famous tale of Aeneas’ affair with Dido, the Queen of Carthage on his way to founding Rome. As Director of Dance at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, Belgium, Mark Morris presented this opera with singers stationed in the pit and with the stage reserved exclusively for dancing.

2017-03-17 · Dido and Aeneas, ACT 1 . Surrounded by her attendants in her court, Dido, Queen of Carthage, is inconsolable. Her sister and handmaiden, Belinda, tries desperately to cheer her up, but Dido is depressed, saying that she and peace are nothing more than strangers now.
